Laura and Dan Taylor’s home is a theatre of beauty. It embraces the faded grandeur of old French chateaux, the soft colours of vintage ballet costume, mystical collections and a hit of 1970s rock and roll chic.

After studying art, Laura became a fashion buyer which led to her working in theatrical costume. Here she developed a passion for the pastel colour palette of ballet dresses and slippers, an influence that sits at the core of her interior look.

Dan, a professional musician and songwriter, is a founding member and lead guitarist of English rock band The Heavy. A love of music runs through the house, with Fender guitars nonchalantly propped up against antique furniture and a white grand piano that stands in the aptly named piano room, working a John Lennon ‘Imagine’ vibe, circa 1971.

It’s impossible to ignore the musical references running through the house, from the second-hand white grand piano and Dan’s collection of guitars, to pictures of John Lennon and Yoko Ono tucked into an ornate mantle mirror and the sounds of Van Morrison drifting from a retro record player.

‘Dan has quite a collection of music posters but the shades are much stronger than our interior palette. I’m really sensitive to colour and its placement and prefer soft tones, but I’m building myself up to integrate these stronger tones into the house,’ says Laura.

Laura’s eye is often drawn to personal, ecclesiastical, magical and rare objects. The way she’s created her home, collected and displayed her finds is something of a ritual.

‘All three homes I’ve made have started with whitewashing followed by layering and then adding detail,’ she explains. ‘When it comes to collecting, this is most definitely ritualistic – by definition a ritual is performing a series of actions according to a prescribed order, and this is exactly what I do. I have sequentially bought Madonna statues, which bring a sense of calm into the home, antique witch balls and crystal balls, which add magic and mystery.’
