‘Made from white recycled sail cloth, with a pop of coloured marine canvas, our yoga mat bag, duffle bag and flight bag are strong and durable,’ says co-founder Mandi Wilkinson. ‘The sail cloth has had a life on the ocean, and though we wash them before crafting into new items the sailcloth is still full of character and reminders of the journeys it’s been on.’

Sails & Canvas make their items by hand in their loft studio at Topsham quay in Devon. They carefully cut the sails to make the most of their original features – be that a number or stitching detail. Not only are they gorgeous and unique, they’re eco-friendly too. ‘When sails meet the end of their nautical life, they inevitably end up in landfill because they’re not biodegradable and that’s where we step in,’ says Mandi. ‘The material is so durable and long lasting; we give it another lease of life in our designs.’

Sails & Canvas have been saving sails and recycling the fabric since 2015. Their stock includes deckchairs, windbreaks, bags, beach and garden items, personalised products and limited editions. If you happen to be a sailor and have sails at the end of their boating life, you can recycle them with Sails & Canvas too. ‘We want to save sails from going to landfill to help protect the planet,’ Mandi says. ‘We think of it like this: sailed, saved, sewn.’
