Let’s face it — renovating a home isn’t cheap. In the UK, a full renovation can set you back anywhere from £50,000 to £150,000 depending on the scale of the work.

But what if that figure is out of reach? The good news: you don’t need a hefty budget to create a space that feels uniquely yours. Decorating with intention, creativity, and a little savvy planning can make all the difference.

  1. Start with a realistic budget

Before anything else, decide how much you’re willing — and able — to spend. It’s not about how much you can stretch, but how well you can allocate what you’ve got. Include a contingency if possible (around 10%) for those unexpected surprises that always seem to crop up.

  1. Research, estimate & map it out

Once your budget is in place, dive into some research. Price up the things you know you’ll need and get a rough idea of costs for any work required. If you’re calling in professionals for certain tasks, gather multiple quotes. The more detail in your plan, the better you’ll be able to stay on track.

  1. Get hands-on where you can

Labour is one of the most expensive parts of a home project. By doing what you can yourself — painting, wallpapering, simple tiling or garden landscaping — you’ll stretch your budget further. Even small jobs add up to big savings, and there’s huge satisfaction in seeing the results of your own effort.

  1. Be a clever shopper

There’s almost always a budget-friendly version of what you’re after. Think reclaimed materials, vintage finds, or high-street hacks. Whether you’re sourcing affordable tools, second-hand furniture, or looking for discount carpets,  shopping smart pays off. Compare prices, explore salvage yards, and keep an eye out for seasonal sales.

  1. Embrace the slow reno

Renovating on a budget is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s easy to feel pressure to do everything at once, but spacing out your projects can help both financially and creatively. Take your time, enjoy the process, and make thoughtful decisions along the way — your home will be better for it.

A final tip: Trust your instincts, get creative with what you have, and embrace imperfection. Sometimes, it’s the quirks and character of a space — not the budget — that make it truly special.
